East Kildonan is north-east Winnipeg’s classic post-war bungalow belt, most of the housing went up between 1948 and 1965, with the original homes built for veterans coming back from the Second World War. Those bungalows are now on their third re-roof cycle, the original aluminum or wood soffit is at the end of its working life, and the eavestrough systems installed in the 1980s or 90s are usually due for replacement. East Kildonan jobs tend to be straightforward in scope but heavy in cumulative work, there’s just a lot of exterior to address on the typical house.
Most East Kildonan bungalows share a similar layout: single-storey, gable roof with a shallow pitch, original lot of about 50 feet wide, with the garage either attached or set back from the house. The roof itself is straightforward to work on, no dormers, no complicated valleys, which means re-roofs go quickly. The complication is usually what’s underneath.
The original decking on a 1950s East Kildonan bungalow is often plank lumber rather than plywood, which performs fine but doesn’t take the same fastener pattern as modern sheathing. Where there’s been ice dam damage over the years, common in the area because the original ventilation isn’t great, the decking has often been patched in spots.
