St. James is west Winnipeg’s classic post-war bungalow belt, built out predominantly in the late 1940s through the 1960s, with the airport on the south side and the Assiniboine River to the north. Most St. James homes are now on their third re-roof cycle, and the original aluminum soffit and steel eavestroughs that were standard on these houses in the 1980s are reaching the end of their working lives. The neighbourhood is one we’ve worked in heavily since Trudel Roofing started in 2011, the housing pattern is consistent enough that we know what to expect before we even climb the roof.
The typical St. James bungalow has a shallow gable roof, an attached garage with its own slope, original 5-inch eavestroughs and aluminum soffit that’s faded or pitted, and an attic with R-12 or R-20 insulation that doesn’t meet current standards. Re-roofs here usually involve more than just shingles, eavestrough, soffit, and ventilation typically need attention at the same time.
The Saskatchewan Avenue grid through St. James has remarkably consistent housing, block after block of similar bungalows on similar lots. That consistency makes scheduling and material ordering predictable, which usually means lower per-house costs than working in more architecturally varied neighbourhoods. We can quote and schedule a St. James re-roof efficiently.
For the older 1940s wartime homes in the streets closer to Portage, narrower lots, smaller footprint, often with original wood siding still in place, siding work is sometimes part of the project. Vinyl siding is usually the right call for the era and budget of these houses.
In St. James we handle full asphalt roof replacement, eavestrough installation properly sized for typical St. James roof volume, soffit and fascia updates that fix the underlying ventilation, and siding work on the older homes where the original cladding has reached end of life.
We also handle roof repair for leaks and storm damage, and work on the small commercial properties and apartment blocks scattered through the area as commercial roofing jobs.
If you’re in St. James and you’re planning a roof, eavestrough, soffit, or siding job, get in touch. We’ll come measure, inspect the full exterior, and give you a written quote within 72 hours.
